Alonzo Church was himself a somewhat unusual character. Blinded in one eye at high school in an airgun accident, he later was knocked down by a trolley car coming from his blind side and was to marry the nurse who took care of him in the hospital.
He wrote a fellowship dissertation in which he proved the Central Limit Theoremc in statistics—and then discovered it had already been proven many years earlier. This kind of thing was fairly common for Turing, and for good reason, as his colleague James Wilkinson described many years later. ‘Turing had a strong predilection for working things out from first principles, usually in the first instance without consulting any previous work on the subject, and no doubt it was this habit which gave his work that characteristically original flavour.
