Previous studies of tangible user interfaces have shown an effect on designers’ cognition during a design task (Fjeld et al. 1998; Kim and Maher 2008; Brereton and McGarry 2000). Kim and Maher (2008) found an increase of epistemic actions, and through a protocol analysis were able to observe an increase in the cognitive processes typically associated with creative design. The potential affordances of the TUIs, such as manipulability and physical arrangements, may reduce cognitive load associated with spatial reasoning, thus resulting in enhanced spatial cognition and creative cognition.
