This ebook provides a range of thermo-chemical applied sciences for conversion of biomass, not just to supply warmth and gear, but in addition intermediate items resembling syngas and bio-oils.  Part one offers an advent to biomass offer chains and feedstocks, and descriptions the foundations of biomass combustion for energy new release. Chapters additionally describe the categorization and coaching of biomass feedstocks for combustion and gasification. half explores biomass combustion and co-firing, together with direct combustion of biomass, biomass co-firing and gasification, quickly pyrolysis of biomass for the construction of drinks and intermediate pyrolysis applied sciences. Later sections concentrate on largescale biomass combustion and biorefineries and large-scale biomass combustion crops, key engineering concerns and plant operation. The concluding bankruptcy seems on the function of biorefineries in expanding the price of the end-products of biomass conversion.

For all biomass fuels in which the use of intermediate storage has been modeled, the fuel has to be transported twice by road transportation vehicles: first from the farm, forest or collection point to the intermediate storage facility and then from the storage facility to the energy conversion facility. e. directly from farm, forest or collection point to the energy conversion facility. , 1998). Finally, there is the option of siting the storage facility next to the biomass energy conversion facility (Papadopoulos and Katsigiannis, 2002; Tatsiopoulos and Tolis, 2003).

It should be noted though that these two options lead to a significantly different supply chain structure: for heavy goods vehicles, the common approach is to form a contract with a third-party logistics (3PL) provider, and therefore the supply chain operator would have a single point of reference and alternative contractor choices. When using agricultural equipment, the operator would normally have to coordinate a significant number of farmers and equipment owners, and therefore the supply chain management workload would be increased.

Therefore, each biomass supply chain that deviates from well-known cases should be carefully examined and designed according to the requirements and peculiarities for that specific biomass type. For example, some biomass types may require open-air drying, others forced drying and others may be prone to self-ignition under certain conditions. © Woodhead Publishing Limited, 2013 Biomass supply chains 29 Lack of standards and regulation for biomass and equipment A significant barrier in biomass energy conversion is the lack of established standards for biomass fuel characterization.
