The northern and western margins of the region are not clearly delineated, but rather are formed by a series of mountain ranges, grasslands, deserts, and highlands that mark a shifting and uncertain frontier between where agriculture is feasible and where it is not. The key geographical features of the Northern Heartland Region are the Loess Highlands, the Yellow River, the Yellow River Plain, and two nearly contiguous rocky peninsulas, Liaodong and Shandong. The interactions among these geographical features determine the principal characteristics of the region.

When the floodwaters recede, the river does not return to its silted-up old channel, but rather has to find a new course to the sea. The river’s course has thus shifted many times since the end of the last Ice Age, and these shifts have meant that the mouth of the river sometimes winds up north of the Shandong Peninsula (emptying into the Gulf of Bohai), and sometimes south of it (emptying into the Yellow Sea). As economic exploitation in recent centuries stripped the Loess Highlands of much of what remained of its protective cover of vegetation, the flooding of the Yellow River, and consequent cutting of new channels, has increased dramatically in frequency.

In the northern border regions attempts to spread agriculture into semi-arid grassland environments very likely resulted in increased rates of soil erosion. Agriculture means villages, and the establishment of settled populations in the East Asian Heartland wrought many changes in the landscape, including alterations in the biodiversity and abundance of native plants, animals, and birds in nearby areas. Even early Neolithic villages were often surrounded by defensive ditches, and sometimes also low walls made from the excavated soil.
